Mountain Artillery Sabre.

Post by RGJDEE » Tue Jul 09, 2019 8:19 pm

Can anyone help with the marks to this Sabre ?
Not sure if the Scabbard throat is 21st MB
or 2nd I MB .
Any other information about the piece gratefully accepted. Thanks R.

Richard, you’re probably aware this is the Indian Pattern and not the British 1896p that it’s often mistaken for. As for the markings I think the spine stamp is Robert Mole & Sons above Birmingham. I’ve never seen the overlayed B A? before. The 1st (Kohat) Mountain Battery changed their number to the 21st in 1903 ( these number changes are a bit of a nightmare to keep track of!) so I’m pretty sure that’s what it is. The date on both throat and chape is stamped as Ca. 09 (ie.1909) which I believe to be the local stamp made at The Cawnpore Harness and Saddlery Manufactory. You also seem to have a matching set as seen by the 33 rack mark on both throat and locket stud, but the mark on the back of the scabbard is not clear. The British Pattern scabbard was virtually identical except that a Mark II appeared with a flattened end to the chape (no doubt as the Gunners were continually kneeling at their screw guns and wearing them out!). Ben.

Ben , one more thing if I may ?
The Scabbard I presume was worn in a cross belt
If so (see prev photo) either Indian Gunners are left handed ( the Scabbard only hangs to the r/h side of the body or is worn “upside down” on the L/H side with the knuckle bow uppermost ??

Yes they wore a cross belt with the sword on the left side but unusually facing forward as hopefully these images show.
