In reply to you both; I guess that I'm 'lucky' that the heavy cavalry sword is, in my opinion, untouched, and with it's regimental markings a fantastic addition to my small collection. Obviously the light cavalry sword with it's heavy scratching on the blade due to the sander, a complete disappointment. I have been collecting on & off for nearly 40 years and have only been let down by auction houses on 3 occasions including this one. On the 2 former occasions I was adequately compensated for the problems I encountered by the auction houses themselves, and all credit to them. You are right that this was a provincial auction house, and not a specialist in militaria, but I would contend that any experienced auctioneer would have known that the obvious (to the human eye, not in the photo's) scratching on the blade would massively devalue it, and it should have been included in the description. It would be the same if they had a piece of Chippendale furniture that had been 'cleaned' with wire wool!
I have used many auction houses over the years in person & on-line, but I will steer well clear of Bamfords in future.

Crimea War interest. https://www.invaluable.com/auction-lot/ ... 23949f58b6

I find it of interest that soldiers of the era valued battle field pickups as much as we do today.

This nice mameluke sabre is coming up for sale (again) on 20 December 2018

https://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/auct ... b3012645e4

Described as 'an impressive sabre of the 11th Light Dragoons' and 'as favoured by the Duke of Wellington'. I asked where the regimental attribution came from and the reply was that the vendor had told them! Its a nice sabre of its type in the style of John Prosser but the attributions of course are fantasy. It was in the auctioneer's previous sale a couple of weeks ago but did not sell - hmmm, I wonder why .....

Possibly the auction had a reserve on the sword? The auction house is remiss not to mention it is the consignor who states the sword is the 11th LD.
This type of practice I do not agree with.

It’s up for sale again with the same estimate. You would think they would have got the message by now

Has anybody noticed 2 French Imperial Guard Chasseur a Cheval sabres coming up for sale on 17 January? Auctioneer's estimate £450-£550 each. If anyone is thinking of bidding on these, you might want to PM me first ....
