Very comprehensive, Matt. I found the Henry Wilkinson June 1846 quote particularly instructive - I don't remember seeing that before.

Thanks John - yes I hadn't seen it before until I stumbled on it about a month ago. It was that source that gave me the idea to try and pull together what we know about the blade type into an article. I will hopefully find more as I go along and update it when I find anything interesting.
