Improvments, Issues & Questions

Postby antiquesword » Mon Feb 27, 2012 10:53 am

I would ike this thread to contain a list of any issues, requests for improvements/fixs or any questions we may have on the operation of the forum. I will then try and deal with them as they are raised.

Hi

I have been trying to load an Avatar with no success at this stage even when I reduce the size to 90x90 pixels. Can you tell me what else I am doing wrong?

In relation to improvements, is there any value in have some pre-determined sections such as a collectors show case currently a feature in the Victorian and Napoleonic forums?

Mark
Can we lock our photos after we have placed here? i.e. so that no-one can pinch them

Richard,
It would still be possible (I think) for someone to take a screen shot even if the images are locked from right-clicking. Maybe the forum should only be viewable by members?

Hi Jonathan
Yes! how do we do that?
What prompted this is that I had to sign my life away to get those photos from the Paris army museum as well as paying a fairly hefty fee. I have put the photos here for our members to look at, I don't want them spread across the internet now.

I am not sure how that works, but I know it can be done. If Mark cannot figure it out he could ask Matt Easton or I can ask the Victorian Wars Forum administrator (I went ahead and contacted him).

The forums is now only visible by members. Therefore the forum is now basically "invitation only".

Hi, I'm at a bit of a loss. Are you uploading from your PC or an online location?
I've just uploaded one for my self with no errors. What error (if any) do you get?

I will create a "collectors show case" thread.

Hi Mark, I just tried to load an avatar again from my computer that I had resized to 90x61 pixels and the following message came up “The avatar’s file size must be between 0 and 6 KiB.” None of the picture software I have will enable me to reduce the picture to 6 Kib. The avatar I tried to use is attached to this post. I have tried other pictures but just get the same message.

You could try reducing the colour depth, but 6kb is quite restrictive.

Hi Cathey,

After some "messing about" with your image I have managed to get it down to an acceptable size.

Hope that helps :)

Hi Ian

Thank you for that it works now, how on earth did you do it? I was using Microsoft Office Picture Manager and I tried Adobe Photoshop and could not get under 8Kib. Thanks again

I've changed the limit to 100Kb but please keep as small as possible. That default did seem very small!

It wasn't easy, I used Gimp, saved in bmp format with the bit rate reduced to 16 bits then I re-saved it in jpg with a reduced quality which did the trick. It was trial and error to be honest, it was difficult to get the jpg to go any smaller than 12kb.

Anyway, Mark has increased the limit now so all my work was wasted :)

Hi Ian

Thanks again, glad it was not just me, I would never have gotten the image that small, sorry your effort was wasted.

Mark

Every time I reply to a PM, I get a message that it has been sucessfully sent but then I find the reply sitting in my 'outbox' rather than my 'sent messages' file.

Anyone else having the same problem?

OK, seems I was being too impatient - message did go after a short while.

I think it sits in the out box until the recipient actually reads the message.

FYI: In regards to picture copying.

I add pictures on my posts by left clicking and holding it down, and right clicking to paste the link.

Doing this over an existing photo in a post I can copy the photo to my computer.

From the previous conversation I believe some members do not want this option as photos may wind up in the public domain.

However we still want the ability to post photos.

File Attachment size
Can someone please remind me of the maximum file size for attachments. I seem to recall it is rather small.
Mark - is it possible to increase this limit ?

Hi admin

I have attempted to send 2 PMs, but both seem to be sitting in my outbox, rather than sent mail. Doesn't look like I can send PMs.

Can you clarify please?

Kind regards,
Jerry
