6th Carabiniers, Dragoon Guards.

Postby Will Mathieson » Sat Dec 23, 2017 4:34 am

An interesting 1912p officers sword and somewhat rare to the 6th Carabiniers, George 5th. Serialized on the blade spine but no maker mark,
guard design is well executed with 6 and crossed rifles. Overall quality is on par with a Wilkinson sword but this 1912p sword has very minor size differences in pommel and grip.
A 6 DG 1912p sword sold 10 years ago at Bonhams for a substantial sum.

Hi Will
Interesting sword. This pattern is discussed in Stephen Wood's 'Those Terrible Grey Horses', p. 112-113 [Osprey 2015].

Thank-you Richard, unfortunately I do not have that book, too late to add it to my Christmas wish list.

Had three Carabiniers swords over the years, one P1821 and two P1912s. Nice to see a regiment sticking to its own "thing" over the years, despite minor differences to the style of the etching on the guard.

There is variation in the 6DG markings. I found one online with VI, and this was on a plaque added to the guard. I would assume it is a regular 1912p sword that an officer wanted to modify to conform to the 6DG pattern.
