French Short Sword Identification

Post by James B » Sat Jun 29, 2019 6:53 pm

Hello again,

I recently acquired a couple of rather unusual groupings of swords/bayonets,I will post some other items soon.

Within one of these groups was what resembles an 1831 French Artillery short sword but the blade just isn't quite right in my opinion.

Pictures attached.

Usually they have a triangular ricasso, this one has a completely flat ricasso.

The blades usually have a 'diamond' profile, however this blade is almost completely flat.

There is only one clear mark on the hilt '550', I presume that this is the weapon number. Other than this there are no visible makers/identification marks which is unusual as most '1831's' are well marked.

The blade is correct in size, 480mm blade and 640mm overall.

Hopefully someone can help.

Manufacturers variance most likely and/or later manufacturing date of a 1831p.
