1879 pattern sawback Martini-Henry bayonets

Post by Matt Easton » Sat Jul 13, 2019 10:44 pm

Hi all,
I am not really a bayonet guy, but in the last few months I have had three 1879 pattern Martini-Henry sawback bayonets through my hands and none of them fitted onto a Martini-Henry rifle (I tried with two different rifles) - the muzzle rings were all too small, quite notably so (not just slightly). I'm sure that someone can explain this and I'm missing something simple, but why would that be the case? None of them seemed to have been bushed for a reduced barrel calibre, they all seemed to have their original unaltered rings.

Thanks,
Matt

I don't have them in hand anymore and cannot measure. Too small for a 45/577 Martini-Henry!

I'm thinking three bayonets can't be wrong but one MH can be, what is the muzzle diameter on your MH?

Hi Matt,
Is you rifle the standard Martini Henry or do you have the artillery carbine? The artillery version has an altered nose cap (cut down I think) that takes a differed fitting for the standard MH bayonet.
Kind Regards
Ian

If the artillery carbine has a smaller outer muzzle diameter then that would certainly explain it! I tried to fit them on two different (and normal spec) Martini-Henry Mk 2s and they would fit neither.

Matt I assumed you were using a carbine, that explains it. MH rifle takes an 18mm muzzle ring while the artillery carbine muzzle ring dia. on the 1879 sawback is just over 16.5mm
